Hackers Can Detect Your Sex Toys From Outside Your House and Turn Them On

This chilling scenario came a step closer today, as hackers at Pen Test Partners (short for Penetration Test, naturally), showed how to take over Bluetooth butt plugs. Scarily, hackers could detect ‘smart’ toys from outside your house… then make them go berserk. The practice of taking over ‘smart’ sex toys is now known as ‘screwdriving’ – from ‘wardriving’, a hacker term for finding Wi-Fi networks while driving, The Register reports.

Researchers from Pen Test Partners were able to detect a Lovesense Hush, a ‘smart’ sex toy remotely – and say they could have set it on full power. (They didn’t). The researchers write, ‘One could drive the Hush’s motor to full speed, and as long as the attacker remains connected over BLE and not the victim, there is no way they can stop the vibrations.

‘We’ve not set out to kink-shame anyone for their use of these devices: adult toys appeal to a huge spectrum of people and their ubiquity allows people to enjoy a sex-positive life, however we think that these same people should be able to use them without fear of compromise or injury.

‘Talking about these issues will hopefully lead the industry to improve the security of its toys.’
