It doesn’t matter the size of the cat or the level to which it is wild or domesticated…if a cats fits, it sits! Case in point, a cougar that plopped itself down on a runway in Idaho thus causing air traffic problems. Diane Cordes, a passenger on a plane affected by the big kitty was quoted as saying, “We were on an approach for landing and all of a sudden the pilot pulled up. After a couple of minutes, he came on the loudspeaker and said the tower called and we had to pull up because there’s a cougar on the runway.”
After the mountain lion was spotted, airport manager Chris Pomeroy said workers attempted to corral the animal. The airport does have a plan in place for wildlife management, he noted.
“We thought we had it contained but it did spring loose and walk across the runway when the Delta flight was several miles out,” Pomeroy said.
Pomeroy used a car to chase the cougar into a fenced-off section surrounding the control tower, he said.
Sadly, it didn’t end well for the cougar as the DNR did not have tranquilizer darts or a trap large enough to contain the purr-baby. However, wouldn’t it have been great to see to cat completely ignoring the pilot yelling at it from the air?
“HEY! GET OFF THE RUNWAY! I NEED TO LAND YOU BIG DUMB ANIMAL!!”
