Just a couple of days after Kraft Heinz started a national debate about whether it should sell the same combination of ketchup and mayo that you could make with your own condiments, the company is back with yet another new sauce. They’ve announced that it has partnered with Momofuku founder and chef David Chang to release his restaurants’ Ssäm Sauce nationwide.
According to Bloomberg, this is the first time that the Korean-inspired chili sauce has been sold nationally; it has been available in Chang’s Momofuku Noodle Bar for the past decade-plus, and was also on the shelves in a select few Whole Foods stores in New York City. (It shares a name with the Ssäm Bar, one of Momofuku’s restaurants). The sauce will be available on Amazon in three variations: original, spicy, and smoky.
“The flavors of Ssäm Sauce are part of Momofuku’s DNA. It’s something that we’ve served in the restaurants for 14 years, and it’s crazy to me that it will now be available across the U.S.,” Chang said in a statement. “I seriously put Ssäm Sauce on everything so we’re really excited to see how people use it at home, especially now that we have the Spicy and Smoky flavors too.”
If you haven’t tried it at one of Chang’s restaurants, the sauce is a combination of gochujang — a Korean chili paste — along with miso, sake, soy sauce, and rice vinegar. (It’s a slightly more complicated assortment than Heinz’s new Mayochup.)
The partnership is also the first for Springboard, which was launched in March with the idea of joining forces with “disruptive U.S. brands within the food and beverage space.” And it seems to have hit those obnoxious-sounding targets with Ssäm Sauce: just days after its release, it has been intermittently unavailable on Amazon for $7.
Hope that doesn’t mean we’re just stuck with ketchup and mayonnaise after all.
