Dorcas Reilly, inventor of Green Bean Casserole, dies at 92. My Life is forever changed…

La Crosse, WI, United States / Classic Rock 100.1

The first person to go to her pantry, pull out a can of green beans, French’s fried onions, a can of cream of mushroom soup and mutter “good enough” has shuffled off this mortal coil. Dorcas Reilly (yes her name was Dorcas) passed away on October 15th at the age of 92.¬†Dorcas Reilly…innovator…genius…gone too soon.

Ms. Reilly’s invention, for the Campbell’s Soup company in 1955, changed my life a whopping 25 years before my birth. The first time I tasted Green Bean Casserole…or Green Bean Bake as it was first called when Ms. Reilly thrust her genius upon the world…my eyes popped open,¬† my mind expanded and I sat in narcotic-like-daze wondering where it had been all my life. I chased that dragon for a good 30 years before I got it under control. I remember roaming the streets looking for Sunday dinners that were a little too fancy for its own good. Waking up in soup kitchens hoping they got a good donation from the grocery stores and degrading myself so some random stranger would throw three things in a casserole dish and walk away for half an hour.

Rest well, Ms Reilly. you have earned it. So, lay yourself in a glass dish…slather yourself in cream of mushroom soup place fried onions about your person and bake yourself at 350 for 30 minutes. Ahh…crap! Now I am hungry.
